Gracie Abrams Bridgestone Arena Concert reviews
Outstanding show
On the evening of, I had the pleasure of attending a concert at the PNC Arena in Raleigh featuring The Wallflowers and Gracie Abrams, in a 20,000 seat venue. The Wallflowers, to begin with, put on a very good performance. Despite that, the sound lacked balance, with an excess of bass that made it difficult to hear the vocals clearly. However, the keyboard player and guitarist skillfully combined tones to recreate the band's original 'sound' from their debut album. Although I haven’t closely followed this group throughout the years, it was a cool experience to see Bob Dylan's son on stage.
Moving on to the Clapton set... the musicians accompanying him this time were truly extraordinary. Chris Stainton on piano, Paul Carrack on keys (also handling vocals for songs like 'Tempted' and 'How Long Has This Been Going On'), and Doyle Bramhall II on guitar all delivered exceptional performances, contributing many memorable moments throughout the night. Clapton showcased his talent with solos, yet he never overshadowed Doyle or the other members of the band, which is more of a tribute to their skills rather than a slight towards Eric. The sound quality improved significantly during Eric's set, although it grew louder as the night progressed.
A standout part of the evening was the acoustic set in the middle, which was truly remarkable and set a high bar for the rest of the performances. The band attempted to surpass it with energetic renditions of "Cocaine", "Love In Vain", "Crossroads", "Sunshine Of Your Love", and "High Time We Went", the final song featuring Carrack on vocals.
Clapton didn't engage much with the crowd, yet the audience showered him with immense appreciation throughout the night. They remained on their feet for most of the show (a contrast to a recent review from another city where the "older crowd" stayed seated), with one of the most enthusiastic responses coming during "Tears In Heaven". As he sang that song, I was deeply moved by the poignant way in which he channeled his emotions into the music. It speaks volumes about his life and the lives of the blues musicians he has long admired - using music as a means to cope with pain. However, on that particular evening, there was no sorrow, only a profound sense of admiration and affection for a truly exceptional musician.
